Service

Shopify work for merchants who want to sell, not administer

Shopify takes hosting, uptime and payment security off your plate. What is left is merchandising, theme quality and the integrations that connect the store to the rest of your business — which is where we come in.

  • Custom and heavily customised themes
  • Store setup, merchandising structure and collection logic
  • App selection, configuration and replacement of app sprawl
  • Migrations to and from Shopify with URL continuity

What does Shopify development actually cover?

Shopify handles hosting, checkout security and platform updates, so development work concentrates on three things: the theme, the store's structure, and the apps connecting it to your other systems. We build and customise themes in Liquid, set up collections, variants and metafields so merchandising works at scale, and keep the app list short enough that the store stays fast and the monthly bill stays sensible.

  • The checkout is Shopify's; the rest of the experience is yours to design
  • Every app carries a monthly cost and a performance cost
  • Metafields and structured content prevent hard-coded merchandising

Common situations

Why merchants ask us to look at a Shopify store

  • A premium theme stretched past its limits

Years of small customisations layered onto a purchased theme, now impossible to update without losing them.

  • App subscriptions outgrowing the margin

A dozen apps, several doing overlapping jobs, each adding scripts to every page and a line to the monthly invoice.

  • The store is slow on mobile

App scripts, oversized hero images and blocking third-party tags, on the device most customers actually use.

  • Merchandising does not scale

Collections curated by hand, product content pasted into descriptions, and no structured data to sort or filter on.

  • The store and the back office disagree

Stock, pricing or order data has to be reconciled manually between Shopify and an accounting or inventory system.

  • Migration in either direction

Moving onto Shopify from a self-hosted store, or off it because the platform's constraints have become the bottleneck.

Engagements

How Shopify projects usually start

  • New store build

A store set up properly from the beginning: product structure, collections, theme, payments, shipping and launch checks.

    • Catalogue structure
    • Custom theme
    • Launch verification
  • Theme rebuild

Replacing an over-customised theme with one that is maintainable, faster and genuinely yours.

    • Liquid theme development
    • Section and block design
    • Performance budget
  • Store rescue

Auditing a store that is slow, expensive to run or hard to merchandise, and fixing the causes in priority order.

    • App audit
    • Speed work
    • Merchandising structure

Platform choice

Shopify or WooCommerce — the honest comparison

Shopify is the right answer when you want the platform to own hosting, uptime, updates and payment security, and your product model fits its structure. You trade some control for a great deal less operational responsibility, and for many merchants that is an excellent bargain.

WooCommerce is the right answer when you need control over data and checkout logic, have pricing or product rules that do not fit a template, or want content and commerce in one system. You take on hosting and maintenance in exchange. We recommend one or the other in discovery, in writing, and we have no commercial reason to prefer either.

  • Choose Shopify for lower operational burden and predictable platform costs
  • Choose WooCommerce for data ownership and unusual commercial logic
  • Migration between them is possible in both directions, and never free
  • Whichever you choose, budget for merchandising, not just the build

Questions

Shopify questions

Do we need a custom theme, or can we customise a purchased one?
A well-chosen purchased theme, customised carefully, is often the sensible starting point for a smaller store. It becomes a problem when years of edits make theme updates impossible. If you are already at that point, rebuilding is usually cheaper over two years than continuing to patch it.
Can you reduce our app costs?
Frequently. We audit what each app does, which are genuinely load-bearing, which overlap and which can be replaced with theme functionality. Anything we replace with custom code, we tell you the maintenance implication of first — an app subscription is sometimes the cheaper option, and we will say so.
Can you migrate us from WooCommerce to Shopify?
Yes, and in the other direction. Products, customers and order history are mapped explicitly before anything moves, URLs are redirected so existing search rankings are preserved, and the migration is rehearsed on a development store before the live switch.
Will the store be fast?
Shopify's own infrastructure is quick. Most slow Shopify stores are slowed by their theme and their apps, both of which are within our control. We set a page-weight and script budget at the start of a build and test the result on real mobile widths rather than only in a lab tool.
Do you handle the product photography and copy?
No. We structure the store so good product content has somewhere to live and prompts you for what each field needs, but photography and product descriptions stay with you or a specialist. We will tell you clearly which content is required before launch.
